Congratulations Boys and Girls Soccer

Both boys and girls soccer finished tremendous seasons by capturing third place in this year's tournament. Everybody from both teams showed huge improvements throughout the season and coaches could not be prouder of their teams. We are definitely looking forward to next year when many players return, but the teams will certainly miss the 8th graders. Thank you to all the parents who helped. We definitely could not have done it without you.

Thanks,
Coach Neff

Boys Tournament Monday

Dear Parents of Boys Soccer Players,

Our first game of the tournament will be Monday at 9:30. If you plan on having your child driven to the field from the school please have them here no later than 8:40 as we will be leaving at 8:45 to go to Cape Christian. If you would like to take your child straight to Cape Coral Christian, that is fine, but they need to be there no later than 9:00. Also, if you are planning on taking them straight to the tournament it would be very helpful if you let me know. You can reach me at 728-8664 any time to let me know. We will leave promptly at 8:45 so please make sure kid is at Good Shepherd if they need a ride. If there are a few parents who are willing to drive that would be helpful as well. If we win the 9:30 game our next game will not be until 1:30. If we were to lose, which we won't, then our next game will be at 11:30. Thank you for all of your help.

Coach Neff

The Crazy Week and Tournament Schedule

In the craziness that is this week of soccer both the boys and girls lost back to back games against Christ Lutheran. Tough losses for sure but ones that can be used as building blocks for both teams, especially as they face Cape Christian today. With the tournament coming up on Monday and Tuesday it would be great for the Rams and Lady Rams to end the regular season on a win so we could use your support if at all possible today at 3:30 for the ladies and 4:45 for the men. The tournament has been changed somewhat in that the boys will be playing on this coming Monday, but the girls will be playing on Tuesday. There just simply was not enough time to fit both guys and girls into one day. While we don't know exactly what time the games will start it will either be 8:30 or 9:30 for both teams. As soon as the finalized times are given out I will let everyone know. Thank you for your support.

Coach Neff

Boys and Girls Soccer Wins 4/20

Yesterday both the girls and boys teams played fantastic games against Noonan Academy of Fort Myers and came away the victors in both. The girls continue their winning streak and their fantastic record as they won 6-0. For the boys it was much closer, especially until late in the game. Tied at 4-4 T.J. Bubar took the punt from T.J. Murray and struck it with power off the first bounce and put it right in the corner for a 5-4 lead. After that Colby Brownell and Sean Cohan got their first goals of the season to clinch a 7-4 victory avenging the boys early season loss to Noonan. All the boys played well and again Brian Cameron and Ricky Bethune got on the score sheet as well and the defense played a great second half especially. With three games in a row next week we will definitely be tested, but I'm sure both teams will continue in the right direction. Have a good weekend.

Soccer Season Update

Well, the soccer season is a third of the way over and both the Lady Rams and the Rams soccer teams have been impressive. The girls have started the season off with 4 wins and one loss, but will look to avenge that loss tomorrow (Thursday) when they host Covenant. The 8th graders have made a big impact for the Lady Rams, but the younger players have certainly held their own especially in the two wins this past week. The boys team, while unable to play as many games or practice too much, have been quietly improving and have a record of 1 win, 1 loss and 1 tie. The defense and the substitutes have been fantastic and the goals have been flowing in from Brian Cameron, Ricky Bethune, T.J. Bubar and T.J. Murray (the boys goalie, but has been scoring on free kicks of which he is 2 for 3). The boys return to action after Spring Break on Tuesday April 17th. I hope to see you there.

Don't forget the girls play tomorrow against Covenant!!

Soccer season is upon us!

Congratulations to the Lady Rams soccer team as they won their first game 2-0 over Providence Christian. A solid performance as Ally and Ashley scored the two goals and a very good game for Jessica Marshall in goal as she records a shut out (or in soccer terms, a clean sheet). The girls continue their season on Monday at home against Covenant and then again on Tuesday as the boys join them against FCI. Tuesday will be the boys first game so I hope everyone can make it out. Thanks,

The Basketball Tournament

I would like to apologize for how long it has taken to post anything related to the results of the basketball tournament.

The girls played hard and won their first game in a very impressive performance against Covenant. Their following game was against Christ Lutheran, and although they played them close they lost in the end to set up another game with Covenant. Unfortunately, the Lady Rams run was stopped against Covenant the second time around and the Lady Rams finished 3rd in the Conference Tournament. Congratulations go the girls and Mrs. Fornell for their hard work and courageous performances throughout the season. (I unfortunately do not have stats for the girls games, sorry.) Thank you ladies for all of your effort.

Now, on to the boys. The Rams started off against the #1 seeded team FCI and lost in disappointing fashion. The next game against Cape Christian was mostly a breeze as the boys put a good performance all the way around. This put the Rams up against Christ Lutheran, whom the Rams had destroyed in their last meeting, but the game would not be as easy this time around. While ultimately boys came out the winners it was not as easy as we would have liked it to be and it took a little more energy than we would have liked. This put the Rams through to the finals where they would face FCI once more. This time was a little different as FCI were shocked as we came out stronger and hungrier for the win. At half time the Rams were only down by the score of 21-18 and should have had the lead had we hit our free throws. Yet, since it was only FCI's third game and our fourth we did not have the energy to beat FCI in the second half. The Rams finished in 2nd place and made FCI work hard for their 1st place trophy and we can't ask for more than that. The total stats for the whole tourney are listed below, but I would like to thank the team, anyone and everyone who helped out at some point time setting up the court or doing stats, and especially the parents. Thank you for a great season!

Kolby Mann: 4 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals
Chris Barr: 38 points, 22 rebounds, 7 steals, 2 blocks
T.J. Murray: 7 points, 32 rebounds, 5 steals, 2 blocks
R.J. Briggs: 2 points, 6 rebounds
Timmy Ross: 6 points, 10 rebounds, 1 steal
Brandon Makar: 15 points, 11 rebounds, 3 steals, 1 block
John Sanchez: 22 points, 20 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 block
Ricky Bethune: 10 points, 10 rebounds, 6 steals
Matt Hellier: 2 points, 3 rebounds
Zach Barnes: 2 points, 11 rebounds, 2 steals

Congratulations to both the boys and the girls for a great season!

3 Games Recapped 2-26-07

Let me apologize for not posting last Friday's game earlier, but I went out of town literally right after the games. The Lady Rams lost a tough game to Christ Lutheran after having a half time lead. They scored 28 points with Caryn leading the scoring with 9. She also had 4 steals and a rebound. Aly added 4 points, 3 steals, and a rebound. Tiffany had a good game with 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals as did Jessica "Twitchy" who had 5 points, 4 rebounds, and a block. Casey came up with 2 points, 3 rebounds, and a steal, Angel added 2 points, and Ciera had a rebound and a steal.

The guys won convincingly 44-10. It was one of their best games of the season and everyone played well. While Chris Barr led the team in scoring again with 18 it was T.J. Murray who had the Player of the Games performance with 10 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 steals and unrelenting defense on the other teams big man. The rest of the stats are listed below:
Chris Barr: 18 points, 12 rebounds, 4 steals
Kolby Mann: 2 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals
Ricky Bethune: 2 points, 2 steals, 1 rebound, 1 block
Brandon Makar: 4 points, 5 rebounds
Matt Hellier: 2 rebounds
John Sanchez: 4 points, 5 rebounds
Timmy Ross: 4 points

Today's game didn't go as well as the last one, but it was an improvement over the last time we played FCI. We scored more points and played better defensively but unfortunately didn't come away with the win. It's a tough call on the player of the game as everyone fought hard but I just don't know who to give it to. Here are the stats:
Chris Barr: 13 points, 2 steals, 4 rebounds
Kolby Mann: 2 points, 3 rebounds, 1 block
Ricky Bethune: 3 points, 4 rebounds
Brandon Makar: 2 rebounds, 1 steal
T.J. Murray: 6 points, 4 rebounds
John Sanchez: 4 rebounds
Matt Hellier: 1 rebound
Timmy Ross: 1 rebound

Rams Get Another Conference Win!!

The Rams came out victorious today in a 33-12 win over Cape Christian. It was another step in the right direction as the playoffs quickly approach. Chris Barr led the scoring with 12 points to go along with his 9 rebounds, a block, and a steal. By stats alone one would have to say that Chris Barr would be player of the game, but Brandon Makar did a great job of leading the team from the point and has really stepped up his game as of late. He had 3 points and 3 rebounds and a number of assists. Another player who has proved invaluable lately has been T.J. Murray. His aggressive play and physical rebounding has been a big help. He recorded 3 points, 4 rebounds and 2 steals. All three of these players could be player of the game. I certainly don't mean to leave anyone out though. Kolby Mann had a good game despite him being slightly injured. He had 4 points and 3 rebounds. Ricky's great awareness on defense was once again at its' best. He had 4 steals, 2 blocks, and 2 rebounds. Matt Hellier has been improving all the time and was second in the team in scoring with 5 points. He also had a steal and a rebound. John Sanchez and Timmy Ross, our big guys, also have been playing better and bigger every game and today was no exception. John had 4 points, 4 rebounds, and a block, while Timmy added 2 points and 5 rebounds.

Please come see the boys play on Friday at Christ Lutheran at 4:30 and get there early to cheer on the girls team who play at 3:30. I hope to see you there.

Coach Neff

Basketball Update 2-6-07

In today's basketball clash the Rams of Good Shepherd took on Christ Lutheran. While the Lady Rams fell to defeat the boys took home another win.
For the Lady Rams it was a hard fought and well played game that in the end just didn't turn out the way they would have liked. Ally led the team in scoring and also had 4 rebounds to go with 2 steals while Tiffany dominated the boards with 6 rebounds and 2 steals. Caryn had 2 points and 2 steals and Jessica C. had 2 points, 6 rebounds and 1 steal. Casey rounded out the scoring with 2 points to go along with her 5 rebounds and 1 steal. The girls next game is against ECS this Friday the 9th.

For the boys it was another win and more improvement from the team as a whole. The team is really starting to come together at just the right time and playing true team basketball. Chris Barr again led the scoring with 9 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals but it was his passing that made a big difference in this game. While those stats are impressive the Player of the Game goes to Ricky Bethune. Playing the 3 spot on defense he had 6 steals and many more deflected passes. He also had 4 points and a rebound. Kolby was also his usual aggressive self and 3 points, 3 steals, and 4 rebounds. Matt Hellier returned from being sick to have his best offensive game this season with 6 points. He also had 2 steals and a rebound. R.J. Briggs, with 2 steals, came up big again on defense and caused many turnovers and even took one for the team when he got hit in the face. Don't worry big guys I'm not leaving you out. Credit to all our big guys who fought hard to keep their 6 foot 3 inches center off the glass and out of the paint. T.J., who grabbed 3 rebounds and had 2 points, especially has shown he can be physical no matter who he goes up against. Props go to Brandon Makar who fought as a big man for part of the game and ran the offense as the point guard for a while too and certainly had the pass of the game. He had 2 points and 3 rebounds as well. Zach continued to be an anchor in the middle of defense and had 2 points, 2 steals, and 2 rebounds. John also continues to be someone the team can count on with his good hands and solid shooting. Tonight he scored 6 points and had 5 rebounds. Last, but certainly not least would be Timmy and Destin. I want to say how much both of these players have improved. Destin has missed lots of time from being sick, but stepped in and played defense and never missed a beat. Timmy meanwhile has become more and more confident with the ball each game and made some key passes in tonight's game.
We will need all of these boys contributions on Friday when the Rams take on ECS at their place. Hope to see you there.

Just a little reminder of how lucky we are that often the most important thing in the day for us is how we do in our basketball game. I am proud of both teams so far and am looking forward to the rest of the season.

P.S. Hopefully sometime tonight the stats from today's game against Christ Lutheran will be posted. Early results are a defeat for the Lady Rams and a win for the boys.

Rams Win Away!!

Both the boys and girls teams won impressively at Sonshine Christian on Monday and will now prepare for Christ Lutheran at home today. The girls team scored 24 points to give their 3rd win of the season. Caryn led the team in scoring with 10 points. She also had 9 steals and 3 rebounds. Jessica Cotrill also had an impressive game with 8 points, 6 steals, and 5 rebounds. The other girls stats are listed below.
Tiffany: 3 steals, 2 rebounds
Jessica W.: 3 steals, 2 rebounds
Angel: 2 points, 2 steals, 7 rebounds
Ciera: 2 points, 3 steals

The boys played a good game and used this as an opportunity to fine tune some aspects of our play. R.J. gets player of the game with his season high 6 points to go along with 4 steals in a performance that will certainly be a confidence booster. The rest of the players stats are as follows:
Kolby: 6 points, 3 steals
Chris Barr: 12 points, 3 steals, 1 rebound, 1 block
Zach: 2 points, 6 rebounds
Timmy: 2 points, 2 rebounds
T.J.: 6 points, 2 steals, 1 rebound, 1 block
Ricky: 4 points
John: 4 points, 2 steals
Brandon: 6 points, 1 steal, 3 rebounds

Look for pictures to be posted later and don't forget about the games today against Christ Lutheran and Friday @ECS. Hope to see you there.

Girls and Boys Basketball Games Recap 2-2-07

Today the Rams traveled to Southwest Florida Christian Academy for two non-conference basketball games. The Lady Rams played first and while they fought hard and kept the game close in the first half, SFCA eventually pulled away handing the Lady Rams a difficult loss 32-16. Jessica Cotrill was the stand out player of the game for the girls as she collected 7 points, 6 rebounds, and a steal. The other girls stats are as follows:
Caryn: 6 points, 2 rebounds
Aly: 3 rebounds
Tiffany: 2 rebounds, 1 steal
Jessica W: 1 point, 2 rebounds, 1 steal
Angel: 2 points, 1 steal
Farrah: 1 steal

The girls have definitely improved since the beginning of the season and all of them have shown tremendous attitude. Which leads us to the guys game. The boys have improved a ton and it showed today against a tough SFCA boys' team. While the Rams lost by a final score of 44-38 it was the Rams who lead most of the game. If not for a little bit better free throw shooting and Kolby Mann fouling out in the third quarter (which I as the coach take complete responsibility for) this would have been the Rams game to win. Yet, the level at which the team played would make anyone proud despite the loss. It was truly a fantastic game to coach and to watch. Chris Barr had a stellar night in a player of the game performance with 22 points and 10 rebounds. R.J. Briggs got his first start of the season and caused many turnovers with his hustle on defense as he also finished with a point from the free throw line. T.J. Murray played through injury to grab 4 rebounds and score 6 points. He also helped to break the press and forced a couple of key jump balls. John Sanchez was back in the starting lineup and while he didn't score he grabbed 5 rebounds and had 2 blocks. Kolby Mann showed up with his usual aggressive style of defense and had 2 steals to go with 4 points. Brandon Makar, only in 5th grade, mixed it up with the big guys and grabbed 4 boards and scored a point. Zach Barnes came off the bench and gave the team some needed energy on defense. He had 4 points and 2 rebounds. Ricky Bethune also played a great game despite being sick. He had 2 points and 3 rebounds. Last, but not least was Timmy Ross who 2 rebounds as he gave our big guys some needed rest. The Rams played great and we look forward to a busy week coming up.

In a later post there will be pictures from the girls game posted. Thanks.

Coach Neff

Lacrosse in P.E. (A pictures post)

(Michael from 5th grade flies in to scoop up the ball.)
Well for the first time we will finally have pictures of the students on the blog page. As many of you know the 3rd-8th graders have been studying and participating in the sport of lacrosse for the past month. Recently I took some pictures of the students playing and will now post them here. Look for more and more pictures from now on as every P.E. section and every athletic competition will hopefully have pictures placed on this website. Hope you enjoy and come back late tonight or early tomorrow for an update on how the boys and girls basketball games went today.

Girls and Boys Lose in Hard Fought Games

Both the girls and guys teams fought valiantly, but lost away at Community Christian of Port Charlotte Mustangs. The girls played an excellent and an improved game from their last meeting against Port Charlotte. The Lady Rams played just as well if not better than the opposition for most of the game, but in a two minute span in the 3rd quarter the Mustangs ran off 10 points in a row that made it difficult for the Rams to fight back. All of the girls should be Player of the Game as they all made great contributions. The girls stats are as follows:
Caryn: 7 points, 3 steals, 4 rebounds
Aly: 3 steals, 4 rebounds
Jessica W.: 1 rebound
Jessica C.: 3 points, 2 rebounds
Tiffany: 3 rebounds
Casey: 2 steals, 2 rebounds

The boys also showed great determination and fight against the Mustangs. The Rams played good defense throughout, but the addition of 3 tall 8th graders, that did not play last time for the Mustangs, meant rebounding was a tough task all night. The offense was good and moved the ball better than they have all season, but the shots just wouldn't fall. To be honest I am not sure who to give player of the game to so I will just list the stats. All of the boys played well and that is why it is difficult to give just one player this award.
T.J.: 3 rebounds, 3 steals
Ricky: 2 rebounds, 2 steals
Kolby: 2 points, 1 steal, 3 rebounds
John: 2 points, 3 steals, 3 rebounds
Brandon: 2 steals, 2 rebounds
Chris: 8 points, 2 steals, 4 rebounds
R.J.: 1 steal, 1 rebound
Matt: 1 steal
Zach: 2 steals, 2 rebounds

Come see us next Friday as we travel to Southwest Florida Christian Academy in Fort Myers. We hope to see you there.

Boys Get Big Win!!

The Boy's Rams Basketball team took their record to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play with a win over Cape Christian on Tuesday the 23rd. The boys showed great hustle and smart play on defense and moved the ball well on offense to score 42 points, the most they have scored all season. Again Chris Barr led the scoring with 16 points through only 3 quarters and his passing was greatly improved. Yet, it was John Sanchez who provided the team with an extra boost as he earns Player of The Game with his 7 rebounds*, 6 points, and 1 block. Everyone played great and everyone contributed to the team in this conference win. The rest of the stats are as follows:
Chris Barr: 16 points*, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals
Kolby Mann: 6 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals
T.J. Murray: 4 points, 4 rebounds, and 6 steals*
Ricky Bethune: 2 rebounds, and 3 steals
R.J. Briggs: 2 steals, and 1 rebound
Destin Adamski: 1 rebound and 1 steal
Brandon Makar: 3 rebounds and 1 steal
Zach Barnes: 2 points, 2 rebound, and 2 steals
Timmothy Ross: 2 points, 2 rebounds
Matthew Hellier: 2 points, 1 steal

*= game leader in this statistical category

Congratulations again to the boys and if you can make it to Port Charlotte on Thursday you will get to see both the boys and girls teams take on Community Christian of Port Charlotte. You can pick up directions packets in the office that have directions to all our away games except Sunshine Christian Academy and SWFC. These two school will be added tomorrow to the packets. Boys Basketball Recap 1-18-07

Yesterday the the boys team suffered a difficult defeat at the hands of Florida Christian Institute 41-19. Unfortunately the numbers don't tell the whole story as the game was closer than the scoreline shows. Player of the game was Kolby Mann who had a great defensive game and also added 4 points. He showed great confidence to step in and play point guard when Chris Barr needed a rest. Chris led the team in scoring for the third game in a row with 9 points. He also had 4 rebounds, a couple of steals and a block. The other stats are as follows:
T.J. Murray: 4 steals, 4 rebounds
Zach Barnes: 2 steals, 2 rebounds
Brandon Makar: 2 rebounds
Ricky Bethune: 4 points, 2 steals, and 2 rebounds
John Sanchez: 2 points, 3 rebounds
R.J. Briggs: 2 steals, 1 rebound

All of the guys played hard and showed great attitude once again. On Monday the girls play away at Covenant at 3:30 and on Tuesday the boys play at home against Cape Christian at 3:30. I hope to see everyone there.

Basketball 1-16-07 Recap

Congratulations to the Good Shepherd Boys Basketball team as they started their new year off with a great team victory over Community Christian of Port Charlotte to take their record to 1-1. While Player of the Game Chris Barr led the way with a great offensive night with 19 points, 7 rebounds, and four steals the whole team contributed to a great defensive effort. Ricky, Kolby, R.J., and Zach gave the Rams the speed and aggressiveness that caused many turnovers while Brandon, John, and Timmy gave us the size inside to constantly make it difficult for the other team to get rebounds and take easy shots. Congratulations also go to Destin for playing his first game of basketball today and doing a sound job and contributing to the team. Please come see the boys battle it out against FCI this Thursday at 3:30 in what should be a high energy up tempo affair. Here are the rest of the stats:
Ricky=2pts., 3 steals, and 1 rebound
Kolby=5pts., 2 steals, and 2 rebounds
R.J.=3 steals
Brandon=3 rebounds
Zach=4 steals and 2 rebounds
John=4 rebounds
TJ=2 steals and 2 rebounds

Unfortunately the girls team didn't fare as well today against the solid Community Christian of Port Charlotte girls team. While the girls did fall to a record of 1-1 they can certainly hold their heads up high with the effort they put in. With that kind of effort the wins will come. Caryn collected 3 steals and 6 points while Allie also added 3 points and 7 rebounds. Jessica Cotrill, also known as "Twitchy", contributed with 2 rebounds, a steal, and 4 points. Congratulations to all the girls for their determination as they never gave up at any point during the game.

Finally I would like to congratulate and thank all of our players, coaching staff, and parents for showing class and a Christ like attitude during, in between, and after the games. I am especially impressed by our student athletes for acting in a way that I can truly say I felt was honoring to God. Thank you.

In Him,

Coach Neff

P.S.
The updated schedule will be posted sometime Wednesday, hopefully early morning. Thanks.

Lacrosse Bonus Questions

These are the bonus questions that will be asked on your test in a few weeks. Since our overall knowledge of lacrosse is limited you can see the questions and then do a little research for your upcoming test for these bonus questions. Here they are.

1. Who were this past seasons NCAA Division 1 men's lacrosse champions?

2. Who were this past seasons NCAA Division 1 women's lacrosse champions?

3. Name 2 companies that make lacrosse only equipment.

4. Name the two professional lacrosse leagues.

These are the bonus questions. There are four this time so if you can get the answers to all four it could be really helpful. Good luck.

Congratulations Girls Basketball!!!

Girls basketball defeated Covenant 24-14 on Monday afternoon to start their season off with a win. Allyson and Caryn both had great games. Allyson had 10 points, 3 steals, and 4 rebounds while Caryn had 9 points, 7 steals, and 3 rebounds. All of the girls team, Mara, Ciera, Jessica W., Jessica C., Casey (who had 5 points), Farrah, and Tiffany (who led the team in rebounds with 7) all had great games. Player of the game goes to two both Allyson and Caryn as they showed leadership and the skill needed to help the Rams to their first victory. Congratulations Lady Rams basketball!

Come next week Tuesday as both the boys and girls team play at 3:30 and 4:30 at Good Shepherd. It should be a tough game for both sides and both games promise to be entertaining as well.

Coach Neff

Edit

I want to apologize for incorrectly posting the date of the girls first game. It will be Monday the 9th at 3:30 p.m. Check here after the game for the score and stats. Thanks.

Also, as we are currently playing lacrosse in P.E., if you would like to buy a lacrosse stick they can be purchased at Play it Again sports in Fort Myers. It certainly is not required but if you (the student) or your child show a lot of interest in the sport it might be fun for them to have a stick they can play with at home.

I hope everyone has a great weekend.

Coach Neff

Updated schedule, Girls first game, and a new semester in P.E.

Welcome back from the holidays!!

A reminder that the girls first game will be this Friday against Covenant here at Good Shepherd. Your attendance would be hugely appreciated to cheer on the Rams as they look to start their season off on the right foot.

Also, starting this week in P.E. the students will be introduced to the great sport of lacrosse. Lacrosse is the first sport this semester and will be followed by other sports that are not as common to this area. In introducing the students to these sports they will become more knowledgeable in all sports and will help them in their overall athleticism.

Now for the updated basketball schedule. You will see a few changes so please take a close look at the schedule. The February 2nd game has been added while some others have been changed or cancelled due to the other school unfortunately not being able to field a team.
